How to start a call from a team chat: one click, the chat stays with you, the recap comes back (2026)

A chat thread getting long is the usual signal: five minutes of talking would beat fifty messages. Start the call

1. Open the channel. Channels are the persistent team chats on the Channels page.
2. Click Join at the top of the chat. You land on the pre-join screen: preview your camera, pick the microphone and the speakers, start muted if you want.
3. Click Join again. You are in the channel's room.

Teammates join the same way — the same Join button, no approval step. The room belongs to the channel: it is the same link every time, so a call on Monday and a call on Thursday are sessions of one room, not two meetings to find later.

Who can join

A channel meeting is for the members of the team that owns the channel. Someone who is not a member gets nothing at the meeting URL — there is no waiting room for a channel, because the channel's membership is the guest list.

To bring an outside person in, add them to the channel: the member drawer searches your team, your contacts, the people you have met in meetings and your organization directory, and an external address gets a pending email invite. A registered user is added the moment they are invited; everyone else joins on sign-up via the emailed link. People you have met in a finished meeting are badged Met before; others outside your team are badged External.

The chat stays with you

The channel chat does not go away when the call starts: it is the same channel, in the meeting sidebar. Share a file, drop a note, paste a link — it goes into the channel's history, where it was going anyway. Two people typing in two languages keep reading each other's messages in their own; the call does not change that either.

When you hang up, the recap comes back

The recap is what makes a call from a channel different from a call about a channel. When the session ends, the recap posts back into the channel — the AI summary and the full transcript — and each member reads the summary in their own language. The thread continues where the call ended, with the decisions in it, for the people who were on the call and the ones who were not.

The room's capacity follows the host's plan: 50 participants on Basic, 100 on Pro, 300 on Business, 1,500 on Enterprise.

What a huddle and a Teams chat call do with the same job
