How to check your network and switch camera, microphone or speakers during a video call — without leaving it (2026)

When a call sounds wrong, the question is whose side it is on. In InterMIND every participant, not only the host, opens the network statistics from the Devices section of the meeting settings, switches camera, microphone and speakers from the device submenu without dropping audio or video, and can run the test room before the next call with no account and no link. Where each control lives, what the statistics show, what happens when a device is unplugged mid-call, and which settings survive the session.

How to check your network and switch camera, microphone or speakers during a video call — without leaving it (2026)

"You're breaking up" is a diagnosis nobody can act on. If you searched "check connection during a video call" or "switch microphone without leaving the meeting", the short answer for InterMIND is that both live in the meeting itself: the network statistics are in the Devices section of the meeting settings, open to every participant, and the camera, microphone and speakers switch from a submenu in the control bar without dropping the call. This guide is the rest: where each control is, what to look at, what happens when a device disappears mid-call, and what to check before the next one.

The network statistics, for everyone

Open the cockpit Settings (the gear in the More menu) and expand Devices. The Network statistics panel is there — for every participant in the room, not only the host or a moderator. Read it when the call degrades: it separates a weak link on your side from one on the speaker's, which is the question the room is really asking.

If the numbers are the problem, two levers are next to them: the Resolution control caps the video resolution at 720p, 360p or 180p to save bandwidth on a slow connection, and the Self-view toggle hides your own tile while you present.

Switch a device without leaving

The control bar's microphone and camera buttons each have an arrow: it opens the device submenu — every microphone, camera and speaker the browser can see, in one place. Pick another one and the call continues on it; switching mid-call no longer leaves the room without audio or video, because the engine reacquires the device from the live list and retries if the first attempt fails.

A device that is unplugged, or taken by another application, is reacquired the same way when it returns. The audio-level indicator on the microphone button shows whether the microphone is picking anything up.

Which settings survive

The meeting settings are split in two:

  • Per session — what you set for this call: resolution, self-view, the devices picked from the submenu.
  • Persistent — what InterMIND remembers between calls on this browser: your meeting defaults, the auto-mute-on-idle toggle. The one meeting preference synced to your account rather than the browser is your translation language, set from the account menu.

The pre-join screen appears the first time you join on a device and again whenever your camera, microphone or speaker setup has changed since — so a new headset is offered to you before the call, not discovered in it.

Before the next call: the test room

The test room is a meeting-shaped page with nobody in it: your camera preview, your microphone level, your speakers, screen sharing, and the network — whether it reaches the outside world, how fast it answers, and a five-second bandwidth estimate against 360p, 720p and 1080p. One badge at the top says how many checks came back short. No account and no meeting link needed; the camera and microphone you pick there are the ones your next meeting starts with.

Idle and auto-mute

Thirty minutes without a mouse or keyboard and InterMIND marks you as away and mutes your microphone, with a notice that says why. You are not removed from the call; any key or mouse movement clears the state, and you unmute when you choose to speak. The toggle is in the meeting defaults.

FAQ

Can participants see the network statistics, or only the host? Every participant. Open Settings from the More menu, expand Devices, and the Network statistics panel is there for everyone in the room.

How do I change my microphone during a call? Click the arrow next to the microphone button and pick another device from the submenu. The call continues on it; the same submenu holds cameras and speakers.

My headset was unplugged mid-call. Do I have to rejoin? No. When it returns, the engine reacquires it from the live device list and retries if the first attempt fails.

How do I test my setup before a meeting? Open the test room at intermind.com/browser-test: camera, microphone, speakers, screen sharing and a network check, no account and no link needed.

Which settings are remembered? Meeting defaults and the auto-mute toggle are kept per browser; your translation language is synced to your account; resolution, self-view and the devices picked from the submenu apply to the current session.
