Slack alternatives for teams that work across languages (2026)

Search "Slack alternatives" and the lists agree with each other: number of integrations, the 90-day history cap on the free plan, huddle quality, price per seat. Useful if Slack's bundle is your problem. Useless if your actual problem is that your team's channels carry more than one language — the standup thread, the customer channel, the decision typed at 11 pm in a language half the team reads slowly — because on those lists every alternative is the same product: a space that assumes everyone shares a language.

This is the other comparison. If you're leaving Slack (or deciding not to) because a Kraków engineer, a São Paulo account manager and a Jakarta support lead share one channel, three axes decide the purchase — and none of them is the emoji picker:

1. Messages: does each member read the channel in their own language — automatically, or one message at a time on request?
2. Calls: does every participant hear the huddle or meeting in their own language, or does someone hold a plan that the rest don't?
3. Afterwards: what does the history look like a month later — and in whose language?

One more fact is recorded beside them, not ranked: where it lives — can you name the jurisdiction the messages, files and recordings sit in?

The baseline: what you'd be leaving

Slack's documentation is unusually precise about its fences:

• Messages: "Translate message" is an AI feature on the Business+ and Enterprise+ plans. You set a translation language in your preferences and translate a message on request; "translations are only visible to you, so other people will always see the original message." Free and Pro have no translation feature.
• Calls: huddles carry audio, video and screen sharing — group huddles on Business+ and Enterprise+, 1:1 on Free and Pro. The AI feature guide lists translation for messages, not for huddle audio.
• Afterwards: on the Free plan you choose between keeping messages for one year or deleting them after 90 days; "on paid plans, data is kept for the lifetime of your workspace by default", with custom retention for owners. Exporting is an owner/admin action — public channels on Free and Pro, private channels and DMs on Business+ with approval — as JSON in a ZIP; members can't export their own messages.
• Where it lives: data residency is a Business+ and Enterprise+ feature, with Frankfurt, Paris, Stockholm, Zurich and London documented for Europe; messages, canvases, files and the search index are covered, member profiles and usage analytics are not. A Data Processing Addendum is available, executed via a form.

So a Slack channel where three languages meet is workable from Business+ up — each reader translates on request — while the stored channel stays in the language each message was written in, and the calls stay untranslated. If that shape fits your team, staying is a defensible choice. The question is what the alternatives change.

Microsoft Teams

The alternative on every list, and the one with the most language machinery:

• Messages: a chat or channel message is translated on request or automatically — "Teams can automatically translate received messages" — in 100+ languages, on desktop and mobile, with no plan or license named for it; an admin can switch it off. The article doesn't state that translated text is saved.
• Calls: translated captions in 31 languages need the organizer's Teams Premium or Microsoft 365 Copilot license; the Interpreter agent — synthetic translated speech in 10 languages — is licensed per listener and metered at 20 hours per user per month, in scheduled meetings only. Captions aren't saved; recordings keep original audio. Details: Teams live translation.
• Afterwards: each message stays in the language it was written in; retention policies can delete chats for everyone in a conversation, and there's no Export button for members — admins export through Graph APIs or eDiscovery (how to export a Teams chat).
• Where it lives: Teams data "resides in the geographic region associated with your Microsoft 365 or Office 365 organization"; country residency is for new tenants only; the EU Data Boundary covers Microsoft 365 tenants signed up in EU/EFTA, with documented exceptions.

Google Chat (with Meet)

• Messages: Automatic Translation converts incoming messages "to your preferred language set in your Google account settings"; "this feature requires an eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plan", and "translated messages are only visible to you". It covers the languages of Google's Neural Machine Translation model.
• Calls: Meet's speech translation runs between English and five languages, one language pair per meeting, as a 90-minute beta, unavailable in recordings. Details: Google Meet live translation.
• Afterwards: history per the admin's retention settings, in the original language.
• Where it lives: data regions — the United States or Europe — on Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise, Frontline and Education editions; Chat messages, attachments and room names are covered.

Against Slack, Google Chat trades on-request translation for automatic translation on the reader's side — on an eligible plan — and adds an English-anchored call layer.

Zoom Team Chat (with Meetings)

• Messages: translated on request — "click the ellipsis icon… Click Translate. The message will be replaced by the translation", Show Original to revert — in 38 languages. Prerequisites: message translation enabled by the admin, and Advanced Chat Encryption disabled.
• Calls: translated captions in 36 languages on Business Plus and Enterprise-tier plans (add-on otherwise); the Voice translator — synthetic translated audio in five languages — via the Live Translation add-on, desktop only. Details: Zoom live translation.
• Where it lives: Zoom's EU Infrastructure "hosts accounts for EU Education and Enterprise customers", covering Meetings, Webinar, Chat and Phone; within it, Zoom "does not transfer outside of or access data from outside this infrastructure unless a prior agreement with a customer is in place".

Against Slack, Zoom's shape is Slack's shape with different numbers: per-reader translation on view, voice behind an add-on, residency behind the enterprise tier.

Mattermost

The open-source, self-hosted answer on most Slack-alternative lists — its own product page is titled that way — and since spring 2026 it has a translation feature:

• Messages: Automatic channel translation (beta, introduced in v11.5) on Enterprise Advanced: back-end is LibreTranslate ("a self-hosted, open-source machine translation engine") or Agents ("the Mattermost Agents plugin with a configured LLM backend"); an admin sets the Languages allowed, and "a worker picks up the post and translates it sequentially into each configured target language". A user's target language "is determined by their Mattermost display language".
• Calls: calls are a Mattermost feature; the auto-translation documentation covers channel posts.
• Afterwards / where it lives: translated posts are produced on your own server; Professional and Enterprise are self-hosted annual seat licenses, prices on request; a single-tenant Mattermost Cloud Enterprise exists.

Against Slack, Mattermost moves both the jurisdiction question and the translation question onto your own hardware — at the Enterprise Advanced tier, in beta, with you running the engine.

Rocket.Chat

• Messages: with Auto-Translate enabled per room, "messages you receive in that room will be automatically translated into your selected language"; "each user receives translations based on their own selected language". Providers: DeepL, Google Translate, Microsoft Translator, LibreTranslate, with credentials the workspace administrator supplies — so message text transits the provider you chose, unless it's LibreTranslate on your own host.
• Calls: through integrations documented for the Starter plan — Jitsi, BigBlueButton, Pexip, Google Meet, Zoom.
• Afterwards / where it lives: the Starter plan is free, "self-managed, self-hosted", "for technical evaluation or small teams of up to 50 users"; paid tiers are Commercial, Government and Defense — on-premises, private cloud or air-gapped — priced on request; the former Pro plan was retired on April 29, 2026.

Against Slack, Rocket.Chat gives each member their own reading language inside the room as a standard feature, at the cost of running the server and holding a translation-provider key.

Element (Matrix)

• Messages and calls: "the entire platform is end-to-end encrypted by default", including Element Call voice and video. No message or voice translation is documented (checked August 2026) — end-to-end encryption by design leaves no server-side place for one.
• Where it lives: Community is free — "free of charge frontend and backend", self-hosted; Enterprise is priced per seat per month, self-hosted; Sovereign is priced per deployment and air-gapped.

Against Slack, Element answers the fourth question as completely as software can — and answers the first two with the original language only.

Nextcloud Talk

"A fully self hosted, on-premises audio/video and chat communication service":

• Calls: the live_transcription app provides live transcription and translation in Talk calls — "the transcription is done on your own server… while the translation is done using a translation task processing provider" — with Nextcloud 33, the High-Performance Backend, and an NVIDIA GPU with at least 10 GB VRAM or a 4-thread x86_64 CPU.
• Messages: translation goes through Nextcloud's translation API, backed by the translate / translate2 apps on your server.
• Where it lives: "ideal for on-premises private cloud deployments or hosting with a trusted, local provider".

Against Slack, Nextcloud puts all of it on your own hardware, including the GPU that does the transcribing.
