Microsoft Teams alternatives for teams that work across languages (2026)

Search "Microsoft Teams alternatives" and the lists agree with each other: free-tier limits, video quality, whiteboards, how well each tool plugs into Office. Useful if Teams' bundle is your problem. Useless if your actual problem is that your team's everyday communication happens in more than one language — the standup, the customer channel, the document somebody pastes at 6 pm — because on those lists every alternative is the same product: a space that assumes everyone reads the same language.

The baseline: what you'd be leaving

Teams ships more language machinery than most lists give it credit for. The documented shape:

• Chat and channel messages can be translated one at a time (Translate above a message) or automatically — "Teams can automatically translate received messages" — in a list of 100+ languages, on desktop and mobile. The article names no plan or license for this, and notes an admin can switch the option off. It does not state that the translated text is saved; translation is described as something you see, not something the channel keeps.
• Meetings: translated captions in 31 languages require the organizer to hold a Teams Premium or Microsoft 365 Copilot license. The Interpreter agent — synthetic translated speech in 10 languages — is licensed per listener (Microsoft 365 Copilot) and metered at 20 hours per user per month, in scheduled meetings only. • Where it lives: Teams data "resides in the geographic region associated with your Microsoft 365 or Office 365 organization". Country-level residency (France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland among others) is offered for new tenants only; existing tenants in France, Germany, Norway, Switzerland and the UK "will have their data stored in the EMEA region".

So a Teams channel where three languages meet is workable on the message level — each reader translates on view — while the meeting layer turns on who holds which Copilot seat, and the history stays in the language each message was written in. If that shape fits your team, staying is a defensible choice. The question is what the alternatives change.

Slack

Slack is the tool most Teams-alternative lists open with. On the three questions, its documentation says:

• Messages: "Translate message" is an AI feature on the Business+ and Enterprise+ plans. You set a translation language in your preferences and translate a message on request; "translations are only visible to you, so other people will always see the original message." The language list isn't sized in the guide.
• Meetings: Huddles carry audio, video and screen sharing — group huddles on Business+ and Enterprise+, 1:1 on Free and Pro. Slack's AI feature guide lists translation for messages; it does not list voice translation for huddles (checked August 2026).
• Afterwards: the Free plan keeps 90 days of message history; paid plans keep it. Translated views are per reader and on request, so the stored channel is the original text.
• Where it lives: data residency is a Business+ and Enterprise+ feature. European locations documented: Frankfurt, Paris, Stockholm, Zurich, London. Covered: messages, canvases, snippets, files, search index. Not covered: member profiles, workspace membership, usage analytics.

As a Teams alternative, Slack changes the licensing shape — translation and residency both sit on Business+ — and keeps the same reading model: one stored language, translated per reader on demand.

Google Workspace (Chat + Meet)

Google's answer is two products under one admin console. Documented:

• Messages: "Translate for me" in Google Chat detects and translates messages automatically, in-line, across 120+ languages — a per-user setting ("Translate messages to your preferred language"). It requires the Gemini Business or Enterprise add-on, or the AI Meetings and Messaging add-on on top of Workspace.
• Meetings: Meet's speech translation runs between English and five languages, one language pair per meeting, as a beta capped at 90 minutes, unavailable in recordings — no translated audio is saved. Translated captions (text) cover more languages on Business Standard and above. Details: Google Meet live translation.
• Afterwards: Chat history is kept per the admin's retention settings; the translation setting describes what a reader sees, not a second stored copy.
• Where it lives: Data regions let an admin choose the United States or Europe for covered data — on Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, Frontline and Education editions. Coverage includes Chat messages, attachments and room names, and Meet recordings, transcripts and attendance reports. Users on unsupported editions "aren't covered by data region policies".

Against Teams, Workspace trades Copilot seats for Gemini add-ons and gives Chat automatic in-line translation — on the reader's side, add-on attached, English-anchored in the meeting.

Zoom Workplace (Team Chat + Meetings)

Zoom's chat product rarely makes the Teams-alternative lists, but it's in the same bundle as the meetings people already run:

• Messages: a Team Chat message is translated on request — "click the ellipsis icon… Click Translate. The message will be replaced by the translation", with Show Original to revert — in a list of 38 languages. Prerequisites in the article: message translation enabled by the admin, and Advanced Chat Encryption disabled.
• Meetings: translated captions in 36 languages on Business Plus and Enterprise-tier plans (add-on otherwise); the Voice translator — synthetic translated audio in five languages — via the Live Translation add-on, desktop only. • Where it lives: Zoom's EU Infrastructure "hosts accounts for EU Education and Enterprise customers" and covers Meetings, Webinar, Chat, Zoom Phone and Contact Center; within it, Zoom "does not transfer outside of or access data from outside this infrastructure unless a prior agreement with a customer is in place", with exceptions for legal requirements, trust-and-safety and service notifications.

The shape is Teams' shape with different numbers: per-reader translation on view, voice behind an add-on, residency behind the enterprise tier.

Mattermost

Mattermost is the open-source, self-hosted answer on most lists — and since spring 2026 it has a translation feature of its own:

• Messages: Automatic channel translation (beta, introduced in v11.5) is available on Enterprise Advanced plans. Two back-ends: LibreTranslate, "a self-hosted, open-source machine translation engine", or Agents, "the Mattermost Agents plugin with a configured LLM backend". An admin sets the Languages allowed; "a worker picks up the post and translates it sequentially into each configured target language". A user's target language "is determined by their Mattermost display language" — decoupling the two "is not currently supported".
• Meetings: calls are a Mattermost feature; the auto-translation documentation covers channel posts, not call audio.
• Afterwards: translations are produced server-side per configured language as posts arrive — on your own server.
• Where it lives: wherever you deploy it — Professional and Enterprise are sold as self-hosted annual seat licenses; a single-tenant Mattermost Cloud Enterprise exists on request. Prices are not listed; "Contact Mattermost sales".

Against Teams, Mattermost moves the jurisdiction question onto your own hardware and the translation question onto your own engine or LLM — at the Enterprise Advanced tier, in beta, with you running both.

Rocket.Chat

Rocket.Chat has had message auto-translation longer than any tool on this list, and a free self-hosted tier:

• Messages: with Auto-Translate enabled per room, "messages you receive in that room will be automatically translated into your selected language"; "each user receives translations based on their own selected language". Providers: DeepL, Google Translate, Microsoft Translator, LibreTranslate — the workspace administrator supplies the API credentials, so message text transits whichever provider you configure (LibreTranslate being the one you can host yourself).
• Meetings: video runs through integrations documented for the Starter plan — Jitsi, BigBlueButton, Pexip, Google Meet, Zoom — so translation inside a call is whatever that integration offers.
• Where it lives: the Starter plan is free, "self-managed, self-hosted", "for technical evaluation or small teams of up to 50 users", and is "automatically provisioned when you deploy Rocket.Chat". Paid tiers are Commercial, Government and Defense — on-premises, private cloud or air-gapped — priced on request; the former Pro plan "has been retired to legacy" as of April 29, 2026.

Against Teams, Rocket.Chat gives each member their own reading language inside the room, at the cost of running the server and holding a translation-provider key.

Element (Matrix)

Element appears on Teams-alternative lists as the sovereign, end-to-end-encrypted option:

• Messages and meetings: "the entire platform is end-to-end encrypted by default", including Element Call voice and video for 1:1 and group chat. No message or voice translation feature is documented (checked August 2026) — and end-to-end encryption by design leaves no server-side place to put one.
• Where it lives: Community is free — "free of charge frontend and backend", self-hosted; Enterprise is priced per seat per month, self-hosted; Sovereign is priced per deployment and air-gapped, "no internet connectivity".

Against Teams, Element answers the fourth question as completely as software can — and answers the first two with the original language only.

Nextcloud Talk

Nextcloud Talk is "a fully self hosted, on-premises audio/video and chat communication service", and the translation story sits in Nextcloud's AI apps:

• Meetings: the live_transcription app provides live transcription and translation in Talk calls — "the transcription is done on your own server… while the translation is done using a translation task processing provider". Requirements: Nextcloud 33, the High-Performance Backend, and either an NVIDIA GPU with at least 10 GB VRAM or a 4-thread x86_64 CPU. 27 languages are listed for transcription.
• Messages: translation in Talk and other apps goes through Nextcloud's core translation API, backed by the translate / translate2 apps — local machine translation on your server — or another registered provider.
• Where it lives: "ideal for on-premises private cloud deployments or hosting with a trusted, local provider".

Against Teams, Nextcloud puts all of it on your own hardware, including the GPU that does the transcribing.
